If their range will satisfy all but long-ish road trips, the anxiety will theoretically disappear. And so it is that Volvo joins the fray, with their upcoming ES90 sedan, a "supercomputer on wheels", supposedly getting up to 435 miles per charge. The ES90 apparently borrows its 111kWh battery pack and 800V electrical architecture from the EX90 SUV, which not only allows for a respectable range but also up to a 350kW charging speed. The latter ensures that you can add up to 186 miles of range in just 10 minutes (provided you find the appropriate architecture).
“Every component in the electric system has been upgraded to be compatible with 800-volt, including the battery cells, e-motors, inverter, charging as well as climate and thermal systems. That creates benefits in terms of charging, efficiency and performance,” Volvo mentions in its press release. In case you were wondering, no, the ES90 doesn’t own the record for highest range – that honor goes to the 2025 Lucid Air Grand Touring at 512 miles. However, the ES90’s price tag (around $70K to start) does compare favorably to high-range contemporaries, with the Tesla Model S (up to 410 miles) at $80K and the 2025 Mercedes-Benz EQS-Class (up to 390) starting north of $100K. |
