Infineon Teams up with Adidas for Shoe that "Hears" Music

It’s not often that we get to utter a world-renowned athletic apparel brand like Adidas in the same breath as anyone or anything in our industry…which makes this collaboration all the cooler.

In a joint project – the likes of which could easily grab eyeballs at the Consumer Electronics Show – Infineon has teamed up with Adidas to create a prototype “lighting shoe” that “hears” and reacts to music.

Infineon took an Adidas Originals NMD S1 shoe and added XENSIV MEMS microphones so it could hear acoustic signals, while an integrated PSoC microcontroller processes the audio input.

The result is a slick light show with “a variety of programmable color effects” – so basically, a more souped-up version of those light-up sneakers that respond to pressure.

But why this particular vessel?

According to Infineon, “The Originals NMD S1 was the ideal model for this joint development project, offering the perfect shape for sensitive, high-quality electronic components without compromising wearer comfort. Use of recycled materials and a circular lifecycle also resonate with Infineon’s mission to drive decarbonization.”

So while you’re unlikely to see this on store shelves anytime soon, it’s a great demonstration of Infineon’s tech which, as the company notes, is normally hidden inside a smart IoT device, connected car, solar panel, or robot.

Then again, it’s not too dissimilar from existing light-up footwear, so maybe we will see this commercialized at some point.

Basically, this would be a hit at the club, bar, party, or any other public gathering with loud music – as the wearer demonstrates in the promo video.
