Luxury automaker Cadillac is going old-school with its latest electric concept vehicle – their four-seat electric SOLLEI convertible is a “design exercise” that “pushes the boundaries of future bespoke commissions.”

Right off the bat, it’s clear the SOLLEI – 'SOL' for sun and 'LEI' for leisure – is as much a frame of mind as it is a high-tech automobile.

Very few technical details were apparent, but Cadillac leans on words like “bespoke” and “personalized”…the implication being that Cadillac customers are, first and foremost, looking for a status symbol.

And the luxury division of General Motors is laying it on thick....

“SOLLEI reimagines the discovery of travel, envisioning a personalized driving experience that connects one with the natural world around them,” said Erin Crossley, design director, Cadillac. “The concept celebrates Cadillac’s pedigree of elegant convertibles in a modern form by cultivating high luxury through design expressions and experiences.”

How does the SOLLEI compare to other luxury EVs? Does it even matter?

The all-electric, 2+2 convertible includes the brand’s signature 55-inch pillar-to-pillar screen, but the SOLLEI is mainly looking to score aesthetic and vintage points.

Its stretched A-body is reminiscent of old-school convertibles, and its exterior is finished in "Manila Cream," which originally appeared on Cadillacs in 1957 and 1958.

But perhaps its most unique feature is a bio-based material developed with MycoWorks. Replacing animal-based leather in the charging mats on the console and the door map pockets, the material is grown from mycelium (the renewable root structure of mushrooms).

What’s the SOLLEI’s range and battery capacity? Is it equipped for fast-charging? And most importantly, what’s the price tag?

None of those crucial details were immediately evident, though again, potential buyers probably aren’t overly concerned with the cost (which could easily be in the hundreds of thousands) or even its performance. What matters is making a statement.

“SOLLEI channels Cadillac’s “art of travel” design philosophy, elevating the travel experience for both the driver and the passenger.”
