New Coilcraft shielded power inductors provide current-handling capability typical of bigger devices. (Click to view larger image.)

The PFL4514 series shielded surface-mount power inductors from Coilcraft require only 16 mm2 of board space and rise only 1.4 mm high. Their current handling—up to 4.2 A—compares to much larger inductors. Magnetic shielding provides more design flexibility by permitting tighter component spacing without electromagnetic interference. Devices in the series are available with inductances from 1.0 to 22 μH and are rated for operation over a temperature range of -40 deg to +125 deg C. The inductors' typical DCR is as low as 80 m?. Applications that require higher current and lower DCR can take advantage of the PFL4517 series, which features saturation-current ratings up to 6.5 A and DCR as low as 40 m? in the same footprint with only 0.3 mm greater height. PFL4517 series devices are available in inductances from 0.68 to 10 ?H. Both series of low-profile inductors provide magnetic shields and, combined with their common footprint, provide for design and prototyping flexibility of high-density circuits. Composite-core construction and heavier-gauge windings provide high current handling and excellent DCR. The inductors are halogen-free and RoHS-compliant, with matte tin over nickel terminations that are compatible with 260°C solder processes. You can request free evaluation samples on Coilcraft's website or purchase the complete range of values for both inductor series, available in Designer's Kit C453. Component pricing at 1,000 piece quantities is $0.50. Delivery is from stock. For more information, visit: www.coilcraft.com.
