Renesas Electronics America, a premier supplier of advanced semiconductor solutions, showcased several of its analog and power technologies at the Applied Power Electronics Conference (APEC), which took place at the Long Beach Convention Center in Long Beach, Calif. Renesas also had the new 8th-generation G8H Series of IGBTs on display.
Renesas combines its low-power microcontrollers (MCUs) with a customized analog front-end that combines digital and analog technology to encapsulate cutting edge solutions for targeted applications. The Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) Solution for clearer images and the Multi-Cell Fuel Gauge Technology for longer battery life are two examples that will be on display in the booth.
In today’s industry, there is a strong awareness of our environment and desire to reduce the energy footprint, which is driving greater needs for market for highly efficient, scalable and safe power solutions. Renesas Electronics power devices offer a strong solution for designers of embedded systems for industrial and automotive applications, like motor drives and the smart grid, especially when implemented with the company’s industry-leading MCUs.
Renesas Technology Demonstrations at APEC
Battery Management:
The Renesas battery management solutions are built around its fuel-gauge ICs— solutions in a package that include an embedded low-power RL78 MCU with an analog front end. The fuel-gauge IC includes MOSFET drivers, a fuel-gauging algorithm, and authentication options. Available for battery packs from 1S to 10S+, these fuel gauges are often bundled with compact, ultra-low Rss (on) common drain MOSFETs to form a compact, efficient, and accurate battery management solution.
Optical Image Stabilization (OIS):
Cameras in mobile devices like smartphones, tablets, and security cameras are highly susceptible to blurry images caused by shaking. The Renesas OIS solution is based on Renesas’ OIS driver IC, which integrates a CPU, a DSP, and peripheral parts in a single package, to reduce image blurring and improve the user experience.
USB Power Delivery (USB PD):
USB PD and USB Type-C specifications define the protocol and connector for USB devices to negotiate with power supplies to provide charging capabilities up to 100W (5A at 20V). Being a long-time promoter company and board member of USB Implementers’ Forum (USB-IF), Renesas offers solutions combining USB PD implementation and best-in-class battery management technology. The solutions position Renesas to be a leader to enable the expanding USB charging ecosystem.
