The Power Sources Manufacturers Association (PSMA) Magnetics Committee is sponsoring the Industry Session “How Are Magnetics Catching Up To SiC & GaN?” at APEC 2014, taking place on Thursday, March 20, 2014, from 2:00 – 5:30 p.m. at the Fort Worth Convention Center in Fort Worth, Texas. The APEC Industry Session (IS2.5) will feature industry and academia experts from Transphorm, Payton America, Inc., Rompower, GeneSiC Semiconductor, Yageo Corporation, Dartmouth College and North Carolina State University. The speakers will provide a broad overview of magnetics trends, materials, and design issues in GaN (Gallium Nitride) and SiC (Silicon Carbide) power conversion applications.
Magnetics design is often overlooked area for power electronics engineers, and yet it is vitally important to get it right. The PSMA Magnetics Committee has recognized the need at APEC for more practical, application-oriented information about this specialty and have responded by organizing an Industry Session on this topic. The session will provide a better understanding of how improved bandgap switches are shaping needs and trends of magnetic components. It will also foster more awareness of new issues and technologies, thereby helping component developers to offer more effective technologies and system designers to better optimize their power electronics.
Stephen Carlsen, co-chair of the PSMA Magnetics Technical Committee, stated: “It is widely believed that magnetics are becoming a limiting factor in accomplishing the potential improvements in power electronics offered by wide bandgap materials. We have organized a strong Industry Session to address the issues and provide an opportunity for attendees to interact with other professionals who are active in the design and application of new materials and designs.” He continued, “I am encouraging people to register for APEC 2014, make plans to attend this Industry Session and consider participating in the other PSMA sponsored meetings during the week.”
