PowiGaN Enables Simple and Efficient 28 V USB PD EPR Adapter Designs – Design Kit Available

With the increasing power level requirements of fast charging protocols like USB PD Extended Power Range (EPR) and UFCS in China, it’s hard to keep chargers small and minimize the use of many discrete components, which need independent specification and sourcing. Power Integrations offers the ideal solution for this, in a new Reference Design Kit (RDK-1002), now available for order. This ultra-compact 140 W USB PD 3.1 EPR adapter design employs two 750 V PowiGaN-based devices to achieve high efficiency and high power density with a minimal number of active components.

• InnoSwitch5-Pro digitally programmable switcher ICs are a single-chip solution that enables zero-voltage switching (ZVS) without the expensive addition of a high-voltage switch. It natively supports 28 V USB PD EPR.

• HiperPFS-5 power-factor-correction (PFC) ICs are the only PFC solution using gallium nitride technology, achieving a 0.98 power factor and eliminating the need for bulky heatsinks at the PFC stage.

This powerful combination allows the RDK-1002 to achieve over 95% efficiency and consume less than 50 mW at no-load. It utilizes far fewer components than asymmetric half-bridge or active clamp alternatives. With InnoSwitch5-Pro’s dynamic programmability through an I²C interface, the design supports six stages of fixed output between 5 V and 28 V, as well as EPR adjustable voltage output from 15 V to 28 V.
