Power Integrations, a leader in high-voltage integrated circuits for energy-efficient power conversion, announced that its powerful, flexible power supply unit (PSU) design tool, PI Expert Suite, is now accessible as a cloud-based app. Previously, users downloaded the tool to a local PC or workstation; with the cloud-based version designers may access the design tool from any internet browser and can be sure that they are always using the most up-to-date version.
PI Expert Suite improves the productivity of power supply design teams by greatly reducing the time to first prototype and by slashing the number of prototype iterations required to finish a product. The software generates a complete schematic of the power supply, even specifying the transformer design and offering links to transformer manufacturers. A heatsink calculation and optimization tool provides the designer with an estimation of the thermal design requirements for a new power supply, which can be used to guide layout and mechanical prototyping decisions – avoiding iterations and wasted time. Enhanced PCB layout recommendations based on the chosen IC device and package allow the designer to minimize trace-induced EMI and board area, and also maximize electrical noise immunity and surge tolerance.
According to Peter Vaughan, director of applications engineering at Power Integrations, “The new cloud-based version of PI Expert Suite is almost like having a Power Integrations engineer on your team. It is loaded with easy-to-use wizard interfaces that help designers input specifications and optimize parameters. The software then uses real-world data to analyze thousands of design options to determine the most appropriate choice. Now that PI Expert Suite is usable in real time and online, designers can use the tool anytime they have an open browser and internet access.”
