Maxim Integrated has announced next-generation gigabit multimedia serial link (GMSL) serializer and deserializer (SerDes) technology to fully support the high bandwidth, complex interconnect, and data integrity requirements required for future automotive infotainment and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS).
According to Strategy Analytics, automotive sensor data aggregation on the hardware side will be a major challenge due to increasing bandwidth requirements for ADAS and infotainment applications as video resolution improves. The analyst firm expects bandwidth requirements to increase by a factor of approximately 25 from 2017 to 2020, and predicts that a move to higher frame rates and resolutions will increase bandwidth requirements even further.Based on a foundation that pioneered many of the features seen in automotive video interconnect today, Maxim’s new GMSL technology offers the bandwidth, rich features, and flexibility needed to build autonomous driving systems.
From low-power requirements in cameras to widely varying bandwidth of sensor data aggregation, the new technology was carefully designed to address the needs of future systems. Advanced link integrity and diagnostic capabilities enable a breakthrough in link performance monitoring—a vital capability to the design of automotive safety systems. Using shielded twisted pair (STP) or coax cables of up to 15m, this GMSL technology also meets the most stringent EMC requirements of the automotive industry. The new technology is backward-compatible with the current generation of already-deployed GMSL products. In addition, the next-generation GMSL technology reduces cables and simplifies head unit design when used in a remote tuner architecture with radio tuners.
“Throughout the years, Maxim’s GMSL SerDes technology has delivered benefits such as better noise immunity and reduced system costs,” said Balagopal Mayampurath, Executive Director of Business Management at Maxim Integrated. “Today, Maxim’s new GMSL technology is a market leader in automotive interconnect and continues to push the envelope to deliver the high performance and ease of use our customers expect.”
