Lattice Semiconductor, a leading provider of customizable smart connectivity solutions, and MediaTek announced the joint release of power-efficient reference designs that drive 4K UHD over a USB Type-C connector. Lattice’s USB Type-C port controllers and MHL transceivers can easily be paired with MediaTek’s Helio X20, the world’s first mobile processor with Tri-Cluster CPU architecture and ten processing cores (Deca-core). These solutions highlight Lattice and MediaTek’s continued collaboration to deliver next-generation, low power video reference designs specifically for the growing 4K UHD market.
Consumers want to lengthen the battery lives of their smartphones and other mobile devices, so delivering high performance features with low power consumption is critical. For smartphones, Lattice’s SiI8348 MHL transmitter is used to seamlessly connect to MediaTek’s Helio X20 to drive 4K video, while the SiI7033 port controller sets up MHL Alt Mode on USB Type-C as well as Power Data Objects (PDOs) required to quickly charge the phone.
The SiI7033 port controller also integrates the required switches to support simultaneous MHL and USB3.1 connectivity over the reversible Type-C connector. For docks and accessories, Lattice’s SiI7013 and the SiI9396 port controllers are used to establish MHL Alt Mode and convert MHL to HDMI transmission respectively to connect to the billions of displays worldwide.
"MediaTek is a valuable partner and together we’re enabling 4K video output on smartphones so users can experience console quality gaming and home entertainment on the latest 4K UHD TVs," said C.H. Chee, senior director of consumer marketing at Lattice Semiconductor. "We’re delivering the world’s most power-efficient 4K video out solution to make these connectivity use cases a reality without sacrificing battery life, so consumers can have the best of both worlds."
