Eversource Energy, New England's largest energy utility, is envelio's first U.S. customer after the German market leader in smart grid software expanded into the U.S. with the formation of envelio Inc. in May. envelio's software is already being used successfully by grid operators in Germany and Europe. Now the Intelligent Grid Platform (IGP) will enable Eversource to accelerate and streamline the grid interconnection process. A new customer interface will consolidate all interconnection information, including advanced hosting capacity, to improve the siting and application process. Building on the IGP’s Grid Hub, the interconnection study processes and analysis willbe enhanced through automation to efficiently handle the increasing volume of new applications. Eversource will take a leadership role in the energy sector by innovating its processes and tackling the energy transition in the United States, starting in Massachusetts.
Integrating renewable generation capacity into the grid is a key challenge for the U.S. energy transition. There is already more than 2,600 gigawatts (GW) of solar and wind capacity waiting to be connected to the grid. envelio aims to unlock this potential by enabling grid operators and utilities to automate and dramatically accelerate the grid interconnection process. The German market leader for grid digital twins is now realizing this goal with Eversource, just three months after entering the market.
Award-winning Intelligent Grid Platform successfully deployed in 50 percent of the German grid and leading in Europe
The software specialist has been successfully offering its Intelligent Grid Platform (IGP) in Europe for some time and has won the internationally renowned BloombergNEF Award in the category of "Challenge 1: Relieving bottlenecks in the deployment of clean power" among other awards.
The IGP builds up and manages a digital twin of the power grid with a powerful network model management engine called Grid Hub. On this basis, the IGP provides a suite of integrated applications for interconnection, grid planning, and operation while bringing grid operators the transparency they need on their grids.
In Germany alone, envelio has used the IGP to automate the process of more than 55,000 interconnection studies in the last 12 months, saving more than 50,000 hours of work for engineers and technical planners. In addition, the IGP provides applications for data-driven decisions in other grid planning and operation processes.
With the IGP, Eversource is now able to digitally monitor its electric grid on an ongoing basis and automatically review grid connection requests. This greatly streamlines the process and reduces the amount of internal labor.
Luigi Montana, CEO of envelio Inc., states: “We are proud to have won Eversource as a prestigious customer as we expand into the U.S. market. The growing number of grid interconnections amid the energy transition is not only a challenge but can also be an opportunity. We look forward to supporting Eversource with our software and working together to drive the energy transition forward in Massachusetts and the U.S.“
