The European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) recently published a new draft of the standard for EMC in common mobile phone chargers (EN 301 489-34), outlining changes to the radio frequency conducted and field immunity test levels. This draft is intended to become a Harmonized Standard and is expected to be adopted in November 2013. The draft relates to the EMC Directive and is part of a set of standards covering all radio and telecommunications terminal equipment within the scope of the R&TTE Directive. Compatibility Requirements of the EMC Directive Specific EMC compatibility requirements for the common external power supply (EPS) for use with data-enabled mobile phones are detailed in this document. An EPS is defined as a "common external power supply with an AC input which meets the requirements of the specifications given" and converts household AC electricity to lower DC voltages required for charging a phone battery. EMC Directive: General Purpose and Content Details regarding the methods of measurement and limits for EMC emissions are also presented, including enclosure of EPS equipment, DC power output ports, AC mains power input ports, harmonic current emissions and voltage fluctuations and flicker. The purpose of this document is to ensure that compliance levels for standalone EPS on radio frequency immunity testing are higher, which would help minimize the risk of non-compliant combinations of phones and accessories and would also ensure a safe and stable performance of the EPS.
