ABB, a leading power and automation technology company, announced details for an upcoming “PowerED” power education webinar series this fall. This free series takes an in-depth look at the major challenges facing the power industry today, along with groundbreaking solutions to overcome them.

Unlike ever before, the power industry is facing unprecedented challenges. Aging infrastructure, changing regulations, distributed energy resources and the convergence of Information Technology and Operations Technology (IT/OT) are dramatically changing the power landscape. Service practices and procedures are shifting, regulations are putting a new strain on already limited resources, new threats are confronting our grid every day, and the current business model makes it difficult to keep up with the grid modernization required to meet the reliability demands for our nation’s most critical infrastructure – the power grid. While these changes seem daunting, new innovations in technology, smarter devices, and the integration of IT/OT can help utilities navigate these issues.

This free webinar series will tackle these issues head on and provide “POWERful insights” for the evolving grid from experts with years of first-hand experience.

The series is made up of four one-hour webinars this fall (all times are Eastern Time):
The changing service landscape – September 29, 11:00 am; Presenters: Randy Schrieber, Craig Stiegemeier, Rick Gardner, Bob Stoner
This webinar will examine the future of power services utilizing new technology, such as remote monitoring, and how to move towards predictive and condition-based maintenance practices.

Resiliency planning for the transmission grid: Resiliency by design – October 15, 11:00 am; Presenters: Don Martin, Ulf Andersson, Martin Shalhoub
While weather events like Hurricane Sandy grab national headlines, they aren’t the only threat to transmission grids. This webinar will examine these threats – such as the shift in generation caused by renewables integration, coal plant closures, aging infrastructure – and ways to prepare the system to withstand and recover from these events with proper planning and investment optimization.

Understanding the effects of geothermal disturbances on the power grid – Nov. 18, 11:00 am; Presenters: Dr. Ramsis Girgis, Arnie Vitols, Albert Keri
This webinar will examine the effects of solar geomagnetic disturbances on power transformers and power systems, the concern the implications of these disturbances have caused, and new FERC reliability standards designed to mitigate the impacts of geomagnetic disturbances. Are power transformers and power systems really at risk?

Remaking the utility business model – December 5, 11:00 am; Presenters: Bob Fesmire, Gary Rackliffe
This webinar will look at the traditional utility business model over the last century, and how a new confluence of changes in technology, regulation and public policy have produced a mortal threat to this outdated cost-of-service model. How can businesses and regulators build a new successful utility business model?
